Add Market Data

WebTrader supports direct-access trading for options, futures, forex, stocks, bonds and funds. It's easy to add market data – simply add tickers to the Market page. To view real-time data, you must log in to Account Management and select your market data subscriptions from the Trading Access menu.

  2. In the Edit Market View box, enter a symbol and select a product type, then click Lookup.
  3. In the list of available contracts, select the contract you want to add, then click Add Contract.
  4. The contract appears in the Manage Current Contracts list. Click [Close] to close the Edit Market View box and add the ticker to the Market page.
  5. Continue to add ticker lines to the Market page. Choose SMART as the routing destination to get best-price execution through IB SmartRouting.SM

Submit an Order

You can place orders in WebTrader from the Market page or the Orders page.

  1. On the Market page, click the Ask price to create a BUY order or the Bid price to create a SELL order for a specific contract.

Or, on the Orders page, enter a symbol and select a product type, then click Go! Next, select the contract you want to buy or sell from the contract box.

  1. In the Create Order box, modify the order parameters as required, including Action, Quantity, Price, Order Type, Time in Force (TIF) and Exchange. Add an order attribute by selecting the appropriate check box under the order.

  1. Click Preview Order, then Submit Order to transmit the order.

You can also use Expert Mode to submit an order without having to preview it first. You enable Expert Mode on the Preferences page.

Monitor Account Activity

Click the Account tab to open the Account page. This page shows real-time balances, margin requirements, buying power, P&L, market values, portfolio details and more for your account.

View Trades

View real-time trade reports listed line by line, and netted by contract. Click the Executions tab to open the Executions page. This page displays daily execution reports, including those completed during after-hours trading.

Customize a Page

You can add modules to most pages in WebTrader. Add the Market View, Charts, the BookTrader, Market Depth, Open Orders and other modules using the [Customize This Page] feature.

Click [Customize This Page] from the Market, Orders, Executions, Account, Options or Products page, then select the module(s) you want to add to that page. Click [Close] to close the Customize This Page box and display the modules on the current page.

You can also change the layout of any page by moving modules. You move a module to a different location on a page by dragging its title bar.

Set Preferences

Use the Preferences page to change your font size and style, switch between normal and expert mode, modify default order sizes for different contract types, modify your execution report settings and change your default display language.

To access WebTrader, use the Login dropdown list in the top right corner of the IB web site. For more details on the features, and for procedures on how to use IB's WebTrader, see the WebTrader Users' Guide.

For our customers who prefer a less complicated trading environment, IB offers the HTML-based WebTrader as an alternative to the Trader Workstation (TWS). The clean, intuitive interface makes it easy to view market data, submit orders, and monitor your account and executions. WebTrader is the perfect alternative for users who work behind a firewall, and since it runs through the Internet, you can log in and trade from any Internet-ready PC with no downloads.

The well-labeled tabs break down trading tasks into simple actions:

  • Market View shows market data and allows you to create orders with a single click on the Bid or Ask price.
  • Orders lets you create and modify orders, and displays a list of all open orders.
  • Executions displays current-day execution reports by action, and shows a summary of exections for each underlying.
  • Account shows you a summary of your account status, your margin requirements, your equity, net liquidation and P&L, and all of your positions.
  • Options displays option chains, allowing you to create a new tab for each underlying, and supports one-click order creation.
  • Products shows you market data, open orders, executions and a chart for a specific product. Create multiple tabs for multiple products.
  • Scanners lets you quickly and easily scan global markets for the top performing stocks. Customize your scan with any combination of user-specified search criteria such as instrument type, market center(s), or price and volume constraints.
  • Search provides drop-down boxes to help you easily define your criteria and find contract information and IDs.
  • Fundamentals provides a profile, news, charting, financials, insider trading info, analyst info and SEC filings for any company.
  • Preferences lets you modify general settings, like the font size and style, execution reports sorting criteria, and the operating mode (expert allows single-click order transmission).
  • Customize Tabs helps you customize the application by creating and designing your own page(s).
  • Customize WebTrader's color scheme by switching between light and dark skins.

Please note that the HTML-based WebTrader supports a limited number of features compared to the Java-based TWS. See the WebTrader Users' Guide for details.

  • Support for Advisors & Brokers.
  • Many specialized order types.

WebTraderSM is IB's HTML-based trading interface, which allows IB customers to access market data and transmit orders from behind a firewall where access to TWS may be impossible. The WebTrader may also be easier to use for customers who don't need all of the capabilities of the Trader Workstation. Note that WebTrader offers limited trading functionality compared to TWS.
